The Making of an Idol

Shalom friends. This is a very busy week and a short week at that. Wednesday night begins the Feast of Yom Teruah (the Day of the Blowing of the Shofar) which continues all day Thursday. In the Diaspora Yom Teruah is also celebrated by many on Friday as well. Friday night, as you know is Erev Shabbat and then there is Shabbat on Saturday. So there are many services to prepare for this week and much to be done here at Congregation Melech Yisrael.

Devarim {32:36} For HaShem will judge His people, repent Himself for His servants; when He sees that [their] power is gone, there is none [remaining], shut up or left at large. {32:37} He will say, “Where are their gods, the rock in which they took refuge; {32:38} Which ate the fat of their sacrifices, and drank the wine of their drink-offering? Let them rise up and help you, let them be your protection.”

One thing HaShem warns bnei Yisrael (the children of Israel) about more than anything else in Scripture is idolatry. Of course it is because idolatry was a real and potential problem for them. They were not only going to occupy a land that practiced idolatry but they were also going to be surrounded by countries filled with idolaters. The pressure and temptation to worship something everyone around them was worshiping would be great and a strong influence on them. HaShem knows human nature, after all He created us so He knew bnei Yisrael would be weak and that they would ultimately fall away from worshipping Him and take up the religious practices of the people and countries around them.

That is why I believe HaShem felt the obligation to warn bnei Yisrael over and over again, not only of the dangers of practicing idolatry but also of its consequences as we have here this week.

However no other warning against the practice of idolatry is more compelling I believe then the one HaShem is giving bnei Yisrael in this passage from Parsha Ha’azinu. Why? Because what bnei Yisrael is being told here applies so much to us today. You are probably thinking that I am referring to Buddhists or Hindus or other such religions which blatantly practice idolatry but I am not. Many believers in Yeshua today are idolaters! Not in the sense as they are accused by some of worshipping three G-d.

I clarified that as being not true two or three D’Var Torahs back, but in the sense that they have created an image of Yeshua which is not real! They have taken the Yeshua of Scriptures and imposed expectations upon Him which are unrealistic, even un-biblical.

Many believers have put so much emphasis on prosperity, healing, signs and wonders, speaking in tongues, prophecies and the like that they have made Yeshua into an idol. They have created god in their own image by putting their trust in something which is not totally real. Now I am not saying that HaShem does not heal and prosper us and I am not saying that prophecies, signs and wonders and speaking in tongues do not have a place in our lives today but I am saying that these are not the things we should be putting our faith in, these are not the things we should be building doctrines around.

Bnei Yisrael was being told in our Parsha that if they put their faith in idols, if they trust in anything other than the G-d of Yisrael, then when they run into trouble, as they will, and then call upon the things which they put their faith in, they will be disappointed because they will fail them, they will not be there for them and He will allow them to fail. I think we should take heed of what is being said here because HaShem is saying the same thing to you today through this Parsha!

I have seen believers, in fact there are whole congregations and denominations that have put their faith in prosperity, healing, prophecies, signs and wonder and the like. I have also seen that when these things failed them, as they will, they had nothing to hold on to so of course they believe that G-d failed them. The truth of the matter however is that they created an idol out of these things and that idol failed them and not G-d!

We need to have a realistic view and understanding of who our G-d is and above all of who we are; that we have a tendency to focus on the prosperity and not the provider, on the healing and not the healer, on the gifts and not the giver of the gifts. Our faith should be based on who G-d is; the creator of everything and not on what He can do for us. HaShem told us that He is a jealous G-d and will not accept us worshipping anything other than Him. Therefore putting the emphasis of your faith on anything other than HaShem, whatever it is you put your faith in, will ultimately fail you and you can be sure that it will fail you when you need it the most.
