What Is There To Eat?
L'Shannah Tovah! It's Rosh Hashannah and we are hungry. What is there to eat? Sweet!
That's what we eat on Rosh Hashannah. Even now I am ordering the large , round, sweet,
raisin studded challot and honey cakes (Rabbi Jack and I are doubly blessed - his Mom
Jessie has already sent us our honey cake direct from Miami - it's in the freezer!) that
are traditional on Rosh Hashannah.
As well I am purchasing sweet concord wine, pure
grape juice for the children, Macintosh apples and honey from the farm. At home, in a
crock pot simmers Tzimmes. Mmmm, what is Tzimmes? This is an incredible blend of carrots,
yams, pineapple, prunes, butter, honey, and I add very tiny matzoh balls and a dollop of
pure maple syrup.
The Yiddish word for carrot is meren, this means
to increase, as we hope our merits will! In most traditional households a brisket is
served. This is a particular cut of beef which we pot or roast with seasonings and carrots
and white potatoes all around it.
Each year at this time a
wonderful fruit comes about, the pomegranate. Not only is it sweet,
so sweet it is almost tart to the taste but it has many seeds. In
Judaism they say that there are 613 seeds in each pomegranate, one
for each commandment. I find this to very romantic but I have never
counted the seeds.
Well,
we have eaten and we are full with thanks unto our L-rd. But how full are we? Now you must
feast on the Word of G-d. L'Shannah Tovah -- Happy New
Year!
