I relate many things to food. I love food and I love to cook. G-d knows what motivates each and everyone of us – individually. He is a caring and intimate Abba (Father) and knows the things that will get our attention. As of late, Congregation Melech Yisrael has been experiencing a revival. We are striving to reach new levels of righteousness and holiness. G-d has been moving and speaking to us in a huge and magnificent way. G-d knows us best and He will continue to do a great work in each one of us. I say all this because one Erev Shabbat service where the Ruach HaKodesh was moving in an almost palatable way, He spoke with me. G-d said we are like onions. At first I smiled to myself and thought that surely this must be a Word from above – NOT. However, He continued to speak to my heart and show me many things. I brought the Word to the Rabbi and with his agreement it was shared with the congregation.

We are like onions. Take an onion in your hand and look at it closely with me. Tighten your grasp on the onion and the outer layer begins to crackle and fall away. We who were once in the world without the grace and the caring of HaShem were dry, brittle and crackling beings. We had no subtleness and sometimes we had a bad smell! This outer layer falls away when we receive salvation in Yeshua HaMashiach. Yes, after salvation, our brittle crackling outer layer falls away exposing a new soft, tender, smooth skin, a new supple outer layer without any cracks.

Initially our salvation walk is either a honeymoon or a war zone, where we either bask in the beauty of the L-rd or do instant battle with the evil one. My husband had a two-year honeymoon after accepting Yeshua HaMashiach as his L-rd and Saviour; I went to war. I experienced something like being on the front lines in a war torn battle zone. But either way, we both received the removal of our cracked, brittle exterior to have exposed a new smooth, soft, gentler under layer. I had this beautiful new exterior layer exposed and it felt so good. It felt like a new wonder cream was rubbed all over my body and I now had the skin of a baby.

However, this layer does not stay new forever, as we walk in and work out our salvation (and as I said some people have a honeymoon and others do not, so there is a time factor involved), we all reach the point where Mashiach begins to do something amazing. He begins to peel back this new layer of skin tearing away old habits and breaking generational ties in our lives, exposing an even newer tenderer soft layer. It is painful to have our skin peeled back so as to expose the previous protected under layer. However, G-d is amazing as He guides us through this ever so painful process, removing layer after layer of bad habits, unrighteousness, unforgiveness and past hurts, only to expose yet another new layer which eventually has to be peeled away as well.

As we grow, pray, read and study the Word of G-d, this process, known as sanctification, draws us closer and closer to our creator, the center of our being, the center of our lives. Each layer that is peeled away is more transparent than the previous, revealing us for all to see. HaShem wants us to be transparent; there is no room for pretext in His Kingdom. This is a process by which our sins are revealed to us, and as we repent of them we become more transparent. Layer by layer we are peeled, layer by layer we are exposed and layer by layer we become more transparent. As we walk through our life with Yeshua HaMashiach, new layers are exposed and we either lose more skin or the exposed skin gets hard and tough and the peeling temporarily stops until we once again submit to HaShem. If we relinquish control to Yeshua HaMashiach, He gently peels each layer back to reveal the heart until He finally pulls out the root of our past lives.

How much like physical onions are we? I did a bit of research on onions and here are some of the similarities I found…Onions have a very high water content; we are made mostly of water. Onion skins become more transparent as you peel closer to the center; we become more transparent as layers of sin are removed from us. Onions come in many colours; we come in many colours. Onions range in sizes of one inch in diameter to more than four and a half inches; we range in many different sizes. Some onions are sweet and some are very pungent; some of us are sweet and some not so sweet. Onions are grown all over the world; G-d has His people all over the world. Another characteristic of an onion is that when eaten raw, the taste is very robust but when put through the fire, the same onion tastes sweet!

Zecharyah (Zechariah) {13:9} And I will bring the third part through the fire, and will refine them as silver is refined, and will try them as gold is tried: they shall call on my name, and I will hear them: I will say, It is my people: and they shall say, HaShem is my G-d.

Are you rolling around in a dry and crackly exterior with a soft, sweet core yearning to be exposed? Then say this prayer with me…

“L-rd Yeshua, come into my life today. Save me from this world, heal me, and show me the way I should go. I accept you into my life as my L-rd and Saviour and I purpose to serve you with sincerity and joy. Deliver me from my sinful self and make me reborn in You. I know You love me and care for me, help me to be transformed into Your likeness. Thank You and Ameyn.”
