"Return To Your Roots"

"Return To Your Roots"; August 2006 / Av - Elul 5766; Vol. 11 No. 12; By Messianic Jewish Rabbi Jack (Ya'acov) Farber, Congregation Melech Yisrael, Toronto, Canada;

We at Kehilat (Congregation) Melech Yisrael are excited that we incorporate liturgical prayers, liturgical chants, and liturgical songs, drawn from our Judaic heritage, into our weekly Erev Shabbat (Friday night) and Shabbat (Sabbath) services. Although this practice is not yet the norm in believing circles, or even among many Messianic congregations, it is wrong to judge it as legalistic.

The worship of G-d in a ‘Messianic’ environment should neither be viewed as being either Jewish nor Christian orientated, nor should worship be judged by whether it is traditionally Jewish or traditionally Christian. All forms of worship should be evaluated solely by whether or not it is Biblical and Mashiach (Messiah) centered. I have been to many congregations, both Messianic Jewish and Christian, where the services were totally man centered instead of being G-d centered. Just because something is religiously Christian does not mean that it is Biblically correct. In like manner, just because something is ethnically Jewish doesn't make it G-d centered.

Yeshua didn't come to create a new religion, but rather He came to correct what was already in existence. What G-d started with Moshe was simply perfected in Yeshua. If that is not the case then why does G-d tell us in Malachi {3:6} “For I am HaShem, I change not; therefore you sons of Ya’acov (Jacob) are not consumed.” And in: Ivrim (Hebrews) {13:8} Yeshua Ha Mashiach (the Messiah) the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.

Throughout Biblical history G-d pleaded with bnei Yisrael (the children of Israel) not to learn the ways of the heathens. In fact, He warned them of impending judgment if they turned to these practices. Yet today, when Jews: Messianic, religious or secular, celebrate the Biblical Feasts or sing liturgical prayers that are composed primarily from Scripture, they are called legalists by a church who practices non-biblical, heathen based, holidays and religious traditions.

Yeshua said in Yochanan (John) {4:22} “You worship you know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews.” If this statement is true, which it obviously is, then the source of all basic truths for the church has come from G-d through the Jews. Any practices, teachings, holidays, or traditions that are not traceable to the Tanach (Hebrew Scriptures) or even the Brit Chadasha (Renewed Covenant) can not be considered sound doctrine. Hebraic liturgy, feasts, festivals, traditions and the observance of the Shabbat have their roots in solid Biblical soil. It is not the Messianic Jewish segment of the church that has moved away from its roots, but rather it is the non- Jewish church at large. Just because we as Messianic believers practice something that the church at large has labeled Jewish does not make it unbiblical or legalistic!

The Torah (law of Moshe) was not destroyed by Yeshua. Mattityahu (Matthew) {5:17} “Think not that I am come to destroy the Torah, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill.”

Man is a sinner. Tehillim (Psalms) {14:2} HaShem looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any that did understand, and seek G-d. {14:3} They are all gone aside, they are all together become filthy: there is none that does good, no, not one. That is why G-d established the sacrificial system in the wilderness of Sinai. An animal died in man’s place because he was unable to fulfill the righteousness of the Torah. The Torah is meant to be a mirror, which when an unregenerate man gazes into it, reflecting his sinfulness, establishes his need for a Saviour. Yeshua, as G-d in the flesh, came to save us. To those that have appropriated His death and resurrection to their life He has written the Torah upon their hearts. Yeshua accomplished the righteousness of Torah, and through His death and resurrection imputed His righteousness to us. Now, when a justified man looks into the Torah they see how a righteous man should live, and because they are righteous through Yeshua they can also fulfill (accomplish) it. The point is, Torah has not been done away with, Torah is still in effect! All mitzvoth (commandments) which are not “Temple” dependant are still relevant for us today. It is not a means of salvation; rather Torah teaches a redeemed person how they are to live out the fullness of their redemption.

The church at large has been deceived by their leadership. They have been lead away from their Biblical roots and thus denied access to their Judaic heritage. A heritage that is guaranteed them, because they are grafted into the Commonwealth of Israel, Efesos (Ephesians) {2:12} That at that time you were without Mashiach, being aliens from the commonwealth of Yisrael, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without G-d in the world:

Biblical Judaism is a far cry from the Judaism we know today. Due to Yisrael’s disobedience HaShem removed His presence from them. As the prophet Yechezkel (Ezekiel) watched in amazement as the kavod (glory) of G-d lifted from the Temple (Yechezkel chapters 9,10,11), and there is no indication that it ever returned. Bnei Yisrael is now left without the presence of the Ruach (Spirit) of G-d. Man’s best effort to replace the Ruach of G-d was with a man centered, works oriented, and legalistic, religious system. Judaism as a religion should not be mistaken with Biblically based Jewish customs, traditions and practices. The fear of Jewishness must be eliminated from the church. The church needs to return to their Biblical roots, why? Galitim (Galatians) {3:14} That the blessing of Avraham (Abraham) might come on the Gentiles through Yeshua HaMashiach.
