Messianic Judaism / יהודים משיחים is a biblically based movement of Jewish people who believe in Yeshua (Jesus) as their Messiah. In so believing they have chosen to worship the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob according to the Biblical customs and traditions of the Jewish nation. To some the concept of being Jewish and believing in Yeshua is an oxymoron. Jewish and Jesus they believe are mutually exclusive.

However when we consider who a Jewish person is According to Scripture, the concept of remaining Jewish and believing in Yeshua are neither an oxymoron, nor are they mutually exclusive. The name Jew was derived from the fourth tribe of Israel, "Judah," meaning in Hebrew "Praiser of G-d." So firstly a Jew is a Praiser of G-d. Most people are under the misconception that being Jewish refers to being a member of a religious institution or that it is a birthright.

Jews today associate themselves with the Jewish religion, just like Catholics associate themselves with the Catholic religion. But this is not what G-d intended a "Jew" to be. Allow me first to start by explaining how the Jewish religion evolved. It all started with Ezra. Upon his return to Jerusalem from exile in Babylon, Ezra understood Israel's plight was because of their disobedience to Torah (the five books of Moses).

So in order to insure that such a tragedy would never happen again, he established the concept of building fences around the original 613 laws. A fence law is a law that is built around another law.

Take for instance the law which states: Shemot / Exodus 23:19 "...Thou shalt not seethe a kid in his mother's milk." The fence around this law is that Jews are not to eat meat with milk. Therefore in order for a Jew to break any one of the 613 Biblical laws they would first have to break the fence laws.

Ezra believed that by doing this he was protecting the Jewish nation from future exile. Over the course of centuries fence laws were added and expanded to the point where today, from the original 613 laws there are well in excess of 300,000-500,000 fence laws. With all these laws, it didn't take long for people to fall into the trap of serving the law instead of serving G-d. The original intent of G-d, to have a personal relationship with his covenant people, developed into a burdensome, works oriented religion. G-d first took a man named Abram, an idol worshiper from the Chaldeans and made a covenant with him. This was an unconditional covenant, Abram didn't have any obligations. G-d in His infinite wisdom arbitrarily chose Abram, changed his name to Abraham and promised him a land, a nation, blessings and being a blessing. Over the course of history and under divine guidance and circumstances G-d began accomplishing His promise. The promise wasn't that Abraham's descendants would be a great religion, but that they should be a great nation.

Now in order to keep this nation separate from the pagan idol worship of the other nations, G-d gave His nation peculiar customs, laws and traditions which He outlined in the Torah. These customs, Mosaic laws and traditions were designed to keep the Children of Israel distinct from all the other nations, as a nation and not as a religion.

You see, being Jewish is a nationality, it was never, ever meant to be an organized religion. "Jews - Praisers of G-d," were meant to have a personal relationship with their creator, who desired to dwell in their midst continually. Religion is not from G-d, relationship is! So considering the above, does a Jew who believes in Yeshua as the Messiah become a Christian? Do they convert? Well we know that being a Christian is not a religion either. The term Christian means "follower of the teachings of Christ." Christ means "Anointed One" or "Messiah." G-d in His infinite wisdom foreknew that Israel would go astray and that eventually they would develop a religion to replace His departed presence, His "Shechinah." Yechezekiel / Ezekiel 11:22-23. "Then did the cherubim's lift up their wings, and the wheels beside them; and the glory of the G-d of Israel was over them above. And the glory of the L-RD went up from the midst of the city, and stood upon the mountain which is on the east side of the city." Ezekiel was describing the glory of the L-rd leaving the Temple, leaving the presence of His apostate people. That is what Phariseeism is all about. It's replacing the shekinah glory of G-d with rules, regulations and man made laws.

Yeshua came to clarify man's relationship with G-d, to bring them back so that G-d's Spirit could dwell, not with them but in them. This is the new covenant spoken of by Jeremiah. Yermiyahu / Jeremiah 31:31-33. "Behold, the days come, saith the L-RD, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah: Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake, although I was an husband unto them, saith the L-RD: But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the L-RD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their G-d, and they shall be my people."

Yeshua accomplished this new covenant by offering, both those from the Jewish nation and from the pagan nations the opportunity to reconcile with their creator, through His atoning sacrifice. Seeing as one man can not pay the penalty for another man's sin, Yeshua was G-d incarnate. G-d Himself satisfied His our requirement for justice, death. What takes place when a Jewish person accepts Yeshua as their Messiah, is they enter into the fullness of their personal relationship with G-d, the original relationship He intended for them to, when He chose Abraham. And seeing as being Jewish represent a nationality, a Jewish person can become a follower of the teachings of Messiah, (Christian) and still remain Jewish.

Does a Canadian stop being Canadian when they accept Yeshua as their Messiah?

N
o, they remain a Canadian by nationality who has entered into the fullness of their relationship with  G-d through Messiah Yeshua. Messianic Jews therefore are simply Jewish people, who by heritage were born into the Jewish nation and have now chosen to enter into the new covenant relationship with G-d as prophesied by Jeremiah (Jeremiah 31.31-34). A relationship originally promised to the patriarchs, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, but which erroneously developed into a man made religion.
