A MESSAGE FROM THE RABBI

"Love Your Neighbour"

"Love Your Neighbour"; January-February 2007 / Tevet - Adar 5767; Vol. 12 No. 01; By Messianic Jewish Rabbi Ya'acov Farber, Congregation Melech Yisrael, Toronto, Canada;

When most people think of Yisrael they would, of course, think of it as the Jewish homeland, which was born out of the ashes of the second Word War and the Nazi concentration camps -- and of course they would not be wrong. There are people, however; when they think of Yisrael think of it as an exclusively Jewish nation that is practicing apartheid and discrimination against the Arabs. Now, certainly there is discrimination in Yisrael, as there is in any other country of the world. In fact it is not necessary to travel outside of our own country, Canada, to find discrimination against minority groups. Yet, even though there is discrimination in Yisrael I found it to be as prevalent between one Jew and another as it was between Jew and Arab. It seems like Israelis do not discriminate in their discrimination -- a plus when you consider the way Arabs in general think about Jews and Yisrael.

Having come from a construction background I always find it interesting to visit construction sites while I am in Yisrael. I enjoy seeing the different, as well as the similar, methods of construction used by contractors as those practiced in my adopted home -- Miami, Florida.

A friend of ours, who had made aliyah (immigrated), was building a home for himself and his family overlooking the Galilee and Lake Kineret. For the first time in Yisreal I was actually able to meet with a contractor and see, hear and feel, first hand, everything that was taking place. What I learned totally surprised me.

It was not their construction methods that caught my attention, although I did see some interesting aspects of it, but rather it was who was doing the constructing that I found most interesting. Not one of them, from the labourers to the skilled workers to the general contractor himself, was Jewish; they were all Arab-Moslems! It was even more surprising to me when I learned that this was the case with most of the construction workers throughout Yisrael, especially those involved in foundation work and concrete forming. These were Israeli-Arabs-Moslems, who were both entrepreneurs and workers making excellent livings practicing their trade.

This reminded me of when I was a young contractor and a non-Jewish friend of mine suggested we apply for a number of supervisory construction positions that were being offered by the government of Saudi Arabia. The pay was exceptional, and the working conditions, including the perks, were beyond generous. Both of us interviewed for the jobs and both of us were more than qualified for the positions being offered, yet my Christian friend was hired and I was graciously turned down. It was years later, after my friend returned from his contractual stint, when I was told by him that it was common knowledge -- Jews are not hired by the Saudis.

There is no apartheid in Yisrael. Israeli-Arab-Moslems can work, open businesses, conduct business, serve in the army, vote, attend university and prosper in The Land. There are Arab-Moslem doctors, lawyers, schoolteachers, and they are all living normal lives and raising their families. The Arab-Moslem community has their own elected officials in both the local and the Federal governments. Try to find a Jew that has these same rights in any Arab-Moslem dominated country! It will not happen, because there are none!

As for the Arabs living in the West Bank and Gaza, they have opted to become a sovereign nation. Surely Yisrael has a right to restrict cross boarder commerce in such as case, as practiced by every other country of the world. If not we can accuse the United States of practicing apartheid, after all, they have constructed a wall to keep out the Mexicans!

Hezbulah and Hamas are propagandists -- second to none. Even Hitler’s propaganda machine can not be compared to the falsehood and manipulation being perpetrated by these two organizations. The fact that they are tolerated by the rest of the Arab world makes them as culpable as if they had produced the propaganda themselves.

Sadly these modern day Nazis have, for the most part, been successful in their campaign against Yisrael and the Jewish people. They have succeeded in painting Yisrael with a brush of racism and apartheid. We can not allow them to continue unchecked. We must speak-out against the lies that are being spread before they result in another holocaust. Jews and Arabs can live together and prosper together. Modern Yisrael is proof of that fact.

We do not have to wait until the return of Yeshua HaMashiach for bothers to at least, get along together. Without a doubt, when Yeshua HaMashiach does return every knee will bow before Him and every tongue will confess Him as Lord, but does that mean we should give up trying to live peaceable with each other until that day arrives?

The Palestinian maps that are being used today in Palestinian schools do not show Yisrael. The entire area is labelled as Palestine. They want to take for themselves this little country that the United Nations returned to the Jewish people and turn it into another Arab state. To help put things into proper perspective I have I included a map so as to compare the size of the country of Yisrael in relation to her Arab neighbours. From this map you judge who should be giving up land!
