Question:
Why do we leave out the "o" in both G-d and L-rd?
Answer:
We leave out the "o" in both G-d and
L-rd in sensitivity to the Jewish community. Judaism holds the L-rd in
such high esteem that they do not want to in anyway risk taking Him
our using His title in vain. In fact most observant Jewish
publications substitute the word "HaShem," as we sometimes do, for
L-rd and G-d. HaShem is Hebrew for "His Name."
People today, including believers
take our heavenly father too much for granted. They call Him the "man
upstairs," or the "big guy in the sky" as well as other inappropriate
names. Even the use of the word awesome today is used inappropriately.
The word awesome when it appears in the Bible only appears applying to
G-d, while today kids and adults alike use it indiscriminately. G-d is
after all the creator of all heaven and all earth. He is the creator
and we are the creature.
Sometimes we can learn something
from Jewish religious tradition, respecting and having a holy
reverence for G-d is but one of these things.
